Football tournament Bern
18 November 2019
St George's Boys and Girls First Teams travelled to the International School of Berne on Friday to participate in their annual tournament. The level of competition at this prestigious tournament is always strong and indoor football (certainly for the boys) resembles more Ice Hockey than it does football.
The teams got off to a great start and the girls went through their group unbeaten to secure a place in the final. The hard work that the girls put in on special moves and ball control skills that we work on in training really paid off and there were some great moves that resulted in super goals for Sophie, Audrey and Izzy. Izzy scored a particularly good screamer into the top right hand corner to defeat Leysin in the final group game.
The boys competition was very rough with a lot of aggressive tactics being tried against the skilful St George's side. Lucas controlled the play well from the back and Itse was a handful up front. Special mention should go to the endless energy provided by Captain Alistair who took games by the scruff of the neck and created many chances. There were some super goals, including a very special one by super sub Matias , who showed amazing quick feet and a super shot from a tight spot.
For all our skills, we came up against the eventual finalists who both came out of our group, Beau Soleil and Leysin. We eventually played and won a game for 5th place and beat a strong Humanities team through superior skill and work rate. Alistair in this game was particularly instrumental in winning his battle against the player in the position left back.
For the Girls, it didn't quite work out in the final and we played with some nerves which meant we lost in the final to Leysin who had a strong fast team. Coach Dave 'Mourinho' Burrows threw on 3 strikers at the end and we managed to get a goal back to make the last minute tight but it was too little too late.
It shows just how far the Girls team have come that they were very disappointed to 'only' achieve 2nd place in the tournament.
Both teams represented the school well and individually they are a credit to their parents. This age group never ceases to amaze in what confident, polite and talented individuals they are.
