For the St. George's Historians out there

25 August 2020

For historians out there, here is a letter sent by Lorna Southwell in 1929 plus a proposal document to potential investors relating to building a new school on its current campus.

In April 1927 the school in Montreux opened with 4 boarders and 8 day pupils, but within 2 years student numbers had reached full capacity having risen to 40 boarders and 20 day pupils.   The accommodation was full and there was a waiting list for school enrolment.  The proposal addresses “A very fine opportunity of development for pioneer members to share in the benefit of new buildings and to welcome new members instead of refusing entry due to being full to capacity in present accommodation”.

It questions “Why school your children in Switzerland?” and refers to a) HEALTH with its dry climate and abundant sunshine, b) LANGUAGE STUDY and c) ACCESSIBILITY – Montreux being on the highway of the Orient Express train!  Furthermore it is written that at least 90% of students will be English and no more than 10% from other countries – how very different from present day! The proposal adds that over 8 acres of land had already been purchased on very favorable terms (£3,250) and the site included a level ground for a full-sized Lacrosse field!

A reputable local architect was employed who would go on to “Produce a dignified and admirably proportioned building in the modern style”.

The amount of capital needed for the project was £44,000 and would be raised by mortgages, debentures and share offerings.  The estimated profit of £3,200 per annum was calculated on school fees amounting to a total of £13,500 per annum based on 60 boarders and 15 day students.
